Excellent high ISO performance, great for shooting in dark environments, good burst mode, Full HD video recording
Slow focusing at times, inaccurate focussing at times
Canon's EOS 550D digital SLR is aimed at users new to the SLR scene, but it's a very capable camera for all types of shooting scenarios. It excels in dark conditions, it's great for portraits, and it can even be used for sporting and action shots. The Ful...
What it doesn’t have is the 7D’s hefty alloy construction and eight frames per second (fps) Continuous Shooting mode. The 550D can manage 3.7fps, which isn’t bad, but can only keep it up for 6 RAW files or 34 JPEGs, which is somewhat disappointing. Eve...
Quality build, High-res 18Mp sensor, Superb ISO performance, Improved intelligent metering, Full HD movie recording
Plastic body only, Cheap and basic kit lens, Cramped optical viewfinder, Cluttered top dial, Clunky movie autofocus
The Canon EOS 550D is not quite Canon's highest-spec'd consumer digital SLR, but it still packs a mighty punch. The EOS 550D sits just below the EOS 50D and the more professionally orientated EOS 7D in Canon's rather cluttered product line-up...
Excellent high-definition movie mode; good high-ISO performance; great design and layout
Detail could be crisper; needs a decent kit lens; pricey for an amateur camera
The Canon EOS 550D does so many things right that it seems churlish to mark it down for anything, but whether you should fork out for this dSLR depends on what you're planning to do with it. It's fantastic for HD movies and great for low-light, high-I...
Overall, we're extremely excited about the potential of the T2i. When the EOS 7D came out, the prospect of HD video on top of 18 Megapixels capability was exciting but not affordable. With the T2i, this is closer to earth and will put HD video capabili...
High ISO image quality is very good. We shot in an almost dark room at ISO 6400 without any high hopes and found the image perfectly acceptable. Noise reduction is not too aggressive and the high pixel density doesn’t seem to have increased image no...
We found a noticeable difference in image quality between jpeg and RAW files. This is not something to dislike, but it is a warning that it is worth the trouble of shooting RAW. The included RAW converter is excellent.
The EOS 550D is an excellent way into the Canon system. It doesn’t have the luxurious feel of the 7D, but then it costs $1300 less for the body. Our test unit came with the Canon 18–135mm lens which is not good enough for the camera. We would...
